Shatter vs live resin vs budder: choosing an extract by how you actually use it

We stock a lot of extracts — shatter, live resin, budder, hash, diamonds — and the product pages tell you the strain and the price but not the thing most people actually want to know, which is which one suits how you consume.

Start with your hardware, not the menu

The honest first question is what you are putting it in. A dab rig with a quartz banger handles anything. A dab pen with a coil is fussier. If you are sprinkling extract into a joint or a bowl, texture decides the whole thing.

Shatter

Glass-hard, translucent, snaps when you break it. It is the easiest extract to handle at room temperature and the easiest to portion — you can break a clean piece off with a dabber without it smearing over everything. Shatter is the largest single category we carry, which is mostly a story about convenience.

Downside: it is stable because it has been purged hard, and hard purging costs terpenes. Shatter tends to taste flatter than a live product. It also goes cloudy and soft over months, which is cosmetic rather than a problem, though it does make it harder to break.

Best for: dabbing, adding to a bowl, anyone who does not want to fight their extract.

Live resin

Made from flower frozen right after harvest rather than dried and cured first, which keeps the volatile terpenes that drying drives off. The result is softer, wetter and dramatically more aromatic. If you have ever wished an extract tasted like the strain smelled, this is the reason live resin exists.

Downside: it is sticky, it needs a cold dab tool and a steady hand, and it wants to be kept cool. Left on a warm windowsill it will separate.

Best for: low-temperature dabs where flavour is the point. Wasted on anything that burns hot.

Budder

Whipped during purging until it turns opaque and takes on a texture somewhere between cake frosting and cold butter. That whipping traps terpenes better than a flat shatter pull, so it usually lands between shatter and live resin on flavour.

Practical advantage: it scoops. No snapping, no stringing, no chasing a piece across the mat. For anyone new to extracts, budder is the least frustrating starting point.

Best for: daily use, pen carts that accept a thicker consistency, first-time extract buyers.

A rough order to try them in

Budder to learn the format, shatter once you know your dose and want easy portioning, live resin when flavour becomes the point. Hash and diamonds are their own conversation and sit either side of that range.

Our extracts sit across several categories rather than one, so it is worth browsing shatter and live resin separately rather than assuming one page has everything. Grades apply here too — the same A-scale you see on flower.

Shatter vs live resin: the short answer

Shatter vs live resin comes down to one trade: stability against flavour. Shatter is purged hard, so it holds its shape and loses aroma. Live resin is made from fresh-frozen material, so it keeps the aroma and gives up the convenience. Budder sits in between on both counts.

Storage, which matters more than people think

All three degrade with heat, light and air, and they degrade at different speeds. Live resin is the most fragile — cool, dark, sealed, and use it within a few months. Shatter is the most forgiving and will sit in a drawer for a long time before anything more than cosmetic change happens. Budder is somewhere in the middle.

A silicone container beats parchment for anything soft, and parchment beats silicone for shatter because shatter does not stick to it. Small detail, but it is the difference between using all of what you bought and leaving some of it on the wrapper.
